Four Dead, Others Seriously Injured in Tour Bus Crash

Blythe, California

Four passengers were killed and nearly two dozen other people were injured in a crash involving a tour bus, a big rig and two other vehicles. The accident happened at around 2:00 a.m. on Interstate 10 near the California-Arizona border.

According to a Caltrans official, a big rig carrying metal pipes was eastbound on I-10 when it jackknifed into the median. "The pipes subsequently caused some of the vehicles to crash into them in the eastbound lanes and it appears they could have rolled into westbound traffic which is where the bus was traveling," said Terri Kasinga of Caltrans. The bus, which was carrying 25 people, collided with the pipes, left the roadway and overturned down an embankment.

CBS News reported that approximately 21 people were taken to area hospitals. Several other people are presumed trapped. All of the fatalities were passengers aboard the bus, which was en route to Los Angeles from El Paso. Reports have indicated that I-10 will be closed until at least 2:00 p.m.
