Orland,
California - April 10, 2014
Ten people lost their lives on Thursday in an accident involving a FedEx delivery truck that crashed into a chartered tour bus filled with Southern California high school students on their way to visit the campus of Humboldt State University. The fatal crash happened at around 5:30 p.m. on Interstate 5 in Orland, California.
Authorities
say the FedEx truck crossed over a grassy median and slammed head-on into the
tour bus, which was operated by Silverado Stages. Witnesses said the collision
sounded like a series of explosions. Both vehicles immediately burst into
flames. Some students were able to escape the burning bus via the emergency
exit while others smashed windows and jumped out.
Officials with the Los Angeles Unified School District said 19 of the students aboard the bus were from high schools in the district. Of the ten killed, five were high school students and three were adult chaperones. The bus driver and the FedEx truck driver were also killed. More than 30 people sustained injuries in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
The Los Angeles Times reports that officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will arrive in Orland on Friday to begin their investigation.
